Serious injuries follow motorcycle accident with tractor-trailer

An accident involving a motorcycle and tractor-trailer in South Brunswick highlights the need for New Jersey motorists to stay aware of motorcyclists on the road. The motorcycle accident occurred on Distribution Way on a Friday at approximately 5:11 p.m. The 26-year-old motorcyclist was on the roadway, and police reported that the 38-year-old driver of a tractor-trailer turned onto the road in front of him. The 2012 Yamaha motorcycle, according to the investigation, did not have time to avoid a collision with the rear of the truck.

The 26-year-old driver is a resident of Plainsboro and remains listed in serious condition. He was treated for injuries by emergency responders before being taken to Brooks Crossing Elementary School for air transport to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The man required surgery for several serious injuries.

Following an investigation, which closed the roadway for two hours, police issued a careless driving citation against the truck driver. There was no word on the potential for further criminal charges or the status of the investigation. Neither the victim nor the family of the victim has indicated the possibility of pursuing a personal injury lawsuit.

A negligent driver places everyone at risk on the road, and the threat to motorcyclists and pedestrians may be even more pronounced. Criminal charges against an inattentive driver may satisfy the community's sense of justice and serve as a warning to others, but fines and jail time do little to help an accident victim. These individuals often face medical expenses, property damage and permanent disability. With a head or neck injury, there may also be long term care needs and rehabilitation. An accident victim facing these expenses may be able to seek compensation for these expenses with the assistance of a personal injury attorney.
