Semi in New Jersey hits overpass and causes serious injuries

Two people were seriously injured when a tractor-trailer driver attempted to go under the Patterson Plank Road overpass with a load that was taller than the 13-foot and 10-inch clearance. The semi driver smashed into the overpass, causing the large steel load to drop onto a van, pinning the occupants inside. The accident occurred on Route 3 in Secaucus on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

One of the occupants in the van was conscious, extracted from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital. Emergency workers were able to remove the other occupant about an hour later. That individual suffered serious injuries to his legs and was airlifted to a Hackensack hospital. The semi driver did not appear to suffer physical injuries but was shaken up and taken to Meadowlands Hospital for treatment.

In addition to the injuries suffered by the individuals in the van, the overpass sustained significant damage. The area was closed for several hours, and traffic had to be diverted to service roads. Delays were expected to continue for some time at the time of reporting.

In this situation, both the truck driver and the trucking company may be potentially liable for the accident victims' injuries. It is not clear whether any arrests have been made or charges filed in this case. However, the victims may want to pursue a personal injury claim in order to help defray the costs associated with the accident. The driver the trucking company could potentially be found negligent if there was a problem with the truck that contributed to the cause of the accident.

It may be advisable for the victims of such incidents to consult an attorney who is knowledgeable in truck accident injuries and personal liability claims. That attorney could help determine if the victims have a viable case for compensation. An attorney may also be able to represent the case throughout proceedings in court and during negotiations with the other party.
