Auto-pedestrian accidents regularly result in severe injuries and death because pedestrians are virtually helpless in those situations. A group leaving an East Brunswick synagogue was struck by a vehicle on Sept. 15. The driver of the vehicle struck the group as it was standing on a curb at the intersection of Hardenburg Lane and Dunham’s Corner Road. Witnesses state that the driver was speeding and appeared to be trying to turn right before the light turned red. The car then jumped the curb and hit the pedestrians, as well as a utility pole.
A woman and her husband were killed outright in the accident. Their son, 27, and another couple were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the vehicle was also taken for medical care, and charges have not yet been issued in the incident.
