Drivers on the state’s roadways must always take care when making a turn into a major roadway, looking out for smaller cars, motorcycles as they do so. Drivers in New Jersey are also responsible for ensuring that plenty of room exists before turning, but drivers who are under the influence of alcohol often misjudge distances and speed. Such impaired judgment can easily lead to an auto accident that may result in severe injuries and even the death of others on the roadway.
A 64-year-old man from a neighboring state was sentenced for a second DUI offense that led to the death of a 38-year-old male motorcyclist. The older man turned left in front of the motorcycle two years ago, causing the crash. The motorcyclist died in the crash.
The driver of the Jeep was sentenced earlier this week to serve nine to 23 months in jail as a result of his guilty plea to DUI and involuntary manslaughter charges. His blood-alcohol level was 0.16 at the time of the accident.
Sadly, and despite concerted efforts from various agencies to raise awareness of the dangers of drunk driving, people continue to drive while impaired. Impaired driving can cause motorists to lose motor control and make poor decisions, endangering the lives of others on the roads. Those injured, or the families of those killed, in such an accident should seek to understand their rights and obligations under the law. It may be possible to seek compensation for lost wages, property damage and medical or final expenses.
