For some motorists, knowing the rules of the road and following them do not always go hand in hand. Many drivers exceed the speed limit, pause instead of completely stopping at stop signs and may not pay enough attention to their surroundings. Unfortunately, these and other factors can lead to a car accident and the serious injuries that can come with it.
Three people were involved in a Feb. 7 auto accident in North Brunswick. It happened at about 11:40 a.m. when an elderly motorist drove the wrong way on the highway. She was killed in the accident.
Police say the 84-year-old woman drove the wrong way on the Route 1 southbound ramp heading to Route 130. She drove her Toyota Camry directly into an oncoming Honda Odyssey minivan. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A married couple in the minivan was also taken to a local hospital. The driver of the minivan sustained a broken pelvis. His wife’s injuries were not disclosed. Due to the wreck, authorities closed the southbound ramp for about two hours.
Car accidents are often caused by a drunk, reckless or negligent driver, though any number of other factors could also contribute to the incident. A car accident victim may sustain catastrophic injuries that require long-term and costly treatment. Once the cause of the accident is determined, victims, or the families of those who don’t survive, should protect their rights by learning about how the law works in regard to lost wages, compensation, medical expenses and pain and suffering.
