A 20-year-old man from New Jersey has been charged with vehicular homicide as a result of an accident in northern New Jersey that left two men dead and two other men seriously wounded. The man was allegedly speeding when the crash occurred in Maplewood. The man crashed into another car after he disregarded a stop sign.
The Montclair and Livingston man has been charged with a variety of traffic violations. These include drunken driving, aggravated assault by auto and two counts of vehicular homicide. The Essex County Prosecutor has called the accident driver negligence since the driver was allegedly driving at high speed and under the influence of alcohol.
The accident, which happened near Essex Avenue and South 4th Street, occurred when the man, driving a 2013 Chrysler 200 hit the second car, a 2001 Nissan Sentra. A 16-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were thrown from the Nissan. They both died at the scene of the accident. Two other men in the Nissan, a 20 year old and another 21 year old, were taken to a local hospital in serious condition. Emergency crews had to remove the men from the crushed car to transport them to the hospital.
The force of impact was strong enough that the two victims who died on the scene actually landed on opposite sides of a nearby house. One man landed 60 feet from the car on the left side of the house while the other man hit the wrought iron railing, causing it to tear from the concrete foundation and then landed 35 feet from the car on the right side of the house.
The plaintiffs in a case such as this might be entitled to reparations for their loss, both emotional and financial, that they experienced as a result of the accident, particularly in a case where driver negligence might be a factor. A lawyer’s advice and guidance can be very valuable in deciding how to proceed with the case.
