A late night accident in the city of Bayonne resulted in the death of one man and criminal charges for another. The collision occurred close to the intersection of East 29th Street and Broadway.
According to police responding to the scene, the auto accident was caused when a 22-year-old man who was also an off-duty emergency medical technician passed another vehicle while heading northbound on Broadway. While attempting to return his vehicle to its original lane after completing the pass maneuver, his vehicle crashed into a Jeep Cherokee that was occupied by four passengers, including a 21-year-old male who was attempting to enter the backseat of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
First responders reported finding the 21-year-old male with severe injuries to his head and lower extremities. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center but ultimately died from injuries suffered in the crash. Witnesses living in the area reported hearing a loud sound and screams for assistance. The 22-year-old EMT faces several criminal charges including drunk driving, causing a death with his vehicle and reckless driving. The owner of McCabe Ambulance, the employer of the 22-year-old, announced that the part-time EMT had been suspended. Another EMT working for McCabe was also involved in a fatal car accident in recent months. A $150,000 bail was set for the 22-year-old EMT.
