5 injured in chain-reaction accident in New Jersey

At least five people were injured in a chain-reaction crash in South Jersey on Aug. 30. The victims were teenage girls who were on their way to a charity soccer game. The accident caused the closure of the road, which lasted for about two hours, while police investigated. Officers continue to investigate the accident but have not yet issued any summonses.

According to authorities, the car accident took place at about 8:45 a.m. on Route 40 in Hamilton Township after a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 39-year-old Vineland man crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and collided with a box truck. The box truck then crashed into a 2011 Jetta, which was carrying the five girls. The Chevrolet ran off the road and caught fire after the impact, and the Jetta ended up on a lawn near the area where the crash occurred.

A 14-year-old female passenger in the Jetta suffered serious injuries in the accident. She was transported via air to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center where she was on life support at the time of reporting. The 18-year-old driver of the Jetta was also injured. Her injuries were described as moderate to severe. Three other girls in the car also suffered injuries. The driver of the box truck was transported to a hospital for observation.

In cases like this, an injured victim might consider filing a personal injury claim against the driver responsible for the accident. If a victim files and the claim is successful, awards might include remuneration for the costs incurred for medical care necessary to treat the injury. While pursuing such compensation in a civil lawsuit, a plaintiff might have to demonstrate the defendant's negligence. For example, a driver that might have allowed his or her vehicle to travel into oncoming traffic might be found negligent and liable for damages caused by a car accident.
