Prevent distracted driving this holiday season

More than 3,000 people were killed in car accidents caused by distracted driving in 2013, according to government reports. The holiday season is one of the busiest travel times of the year, which increases the risk of car accidents.

When you combine the busiest travel time of the year with distracted driving, the risk for serious or fatal crashes significantly increases. All drivers need to be aware of the dangers of distracted driving, and what they can do to prevent an accident this holiday season.

Many law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols in December to try and prevent crashes, especially those caused by distracted drivers.

Drivers need to take action to stay safe behind the wheel. Distracted driving can involve all types of dangerous behaviors, including texting, reading your email, browning on your cellphone, eating, changing the radio and even talking to passengers.

It is your responsibility to prevent distractions while driving. Being aware of what can cause you to become distracted should help you take steps to prevent these dangerous behaviors before they start.

The list below are steps you can take to prevent distractions while driving:

  • Turn your cellphone off or keep out of reach
  • Preset the radio and other controls before you start driving
  • Do not eat while driving
  • Get directions before you begin driving

Your actions behind the wheel impact everyone on the road. During this holiday season, it is important to understand how you can prevent accidents so everyone can get to where they are going safely.
