When thinking of a dog, images of playful, sweet and loving animals may come to mind. As “man’s best friend,” dogs are a dear companion to many. Some may even say their dog is a part of their family.
With these overwhelmingly positive connotations, it is truly frightening to learn when a dog has become violent with people. Sadly, a dog attack is not an unheard of event. That is exactly what happened earlier this month: a pit bull has been reported to have attacked at least five people at an apartment complex in Neptune, New Jersey, including a 10-year-old child. The dog was in the apartment complex because the dog had apparently attacked the owner’s spouse a few days earlier.
After the dog nearly escaped the apartment, bystanders managed to restrain it until responders arrived, even as they suffered injuries of their own. Four people were taken to a nearby hospital, with one reported to have sustained serious injuries. As of the report, the dog has been euthanized, and no one has been charged with a crime.
In cases like these, we get the harsh reminder that dogs have the capability to be dangerous animals. More than cuddly pets and companions, they have the potential to deal out very serious dog bite injuries. Especially with children involved, these situations can be traumatic and life-changing. Learning this the hard way can bring about large medical expenses, emotional trauma and property damage.
Suffering an injury from an animal that is not yours, no matter how small, may entitle you to compensation. If this has happened to you, it may be in your best interest to consult with an attorney and explore your options.
