Defective auto parts and their role in accidents

Drivers in New Jersey have to rely on their vehicles to get them where they need to go. Unfortunately, this puts them at the mercy of any defective parts their car might have. These parts affect the overall performance of the vehicle and, in some cases, how safe the vehicle is to drive in.

FindLaw discusses vehicle defects and recalls, which often involve one or more parts of a car that do not perform in the way they should. Common examples include airbags that don't deploy as intended, or seatbelt defects which make it so these protective devices don't properly restrain a body in motion. In all of these cases, the defects that these parts have could result in potentially lethal scenarios.

However, some defective parts can even contribute to crashes rather than increasing the driver's chance of being injured. For example, there have been mass recalls before for issues involving the steering and braking systems of certain vehicles. If either of these systems have defects or fail in the middle of driving, it can have catastrophic consequences for everyone on the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration keeps a site up that tracks all recalls related to motor vehicle safety. This way, drivers are able to see if their car is at risk, and will know to turn their parts in if defective. Fortunately, by taking proactive measures and keeping an eye on recalls and signs of issues within a car, a driver is potentially able to catch any problems before they can start.
