When a dog bites: Tips for owners

Many New Jersey residents may find it difficult to imagine that their dog will ever bite someone. However, there may come a day when people find themselves in this situation, and it is important for them to know what to do.

A dog might bite someone at home or while people are out walking their dog. Banfield Pet Hospital says that regardless of where the bite occurs, it is important for people to stay calm. If people are at home, it is a good idea for them to put their dog in another room or in a crate so they can make sure their guest is okay. People should also get antiseptic and a bandage or offer to take their guest to a nearby medical facility.

Sometimes dogs may bite while people are out in public places. In this situation, people should make sure they exchange contact information with the person their dog just bit. It is also important for dog owners to make sure they calm their dog down and get him or her under control. Sometimes someone may have witnessed the bite, and it is a good idea for owners to make sure they have contact information for this person as well.

In the days after a dog bites someone, it is important for owners to take action. According to Canine Journal, people should typically reach out to the person who was bitten to see how he or she is doing. It is also a good idea to give this person a copy of the dog's medical records. Some people may also want to offer to take care of any medical expenses a person incurs because of the bite. It is important for people to remember that the law may take a different stance on their dog after the bite. Some people may need to take extra precautions to demonstrate that their dog is not dangerous, such as quarantine their pet at home for a period of time.
