How to spot an aggressive driver

Navigating the New Jersey roadways can be daunting. It is not uncommon to get stuck in traffic while rushing to work or an appointment, which can cause serious frustration. According to AAA, approximately 80 percent of motorists across the United States admit to engaging in aggressive driving at some point within the last year. These dangerous driving behaviors come with a heavy risk. Aggressive drivers can cause catastrophic traffic accidents, which lead to serious injuries and death. AAA reported that 56 percent of deadly car accidents involve a form of aggressive driving. It may be critical that you know how to spot an aggressive driver, so you can potentially avoid an accident.

Common signs to watch for when dealing with aggressive drivers include the following:

  •          Excessive horn honking
  •          Cutting off other drivers and blocking
  •          Using obscene gestures or yelling expletives to other drivers
  •          Tailgating or traveling too closely
  •          Speeding and weaving in and out of traffic
  •          Failing to yield to traffic signals, stop signs or other drivers’ right of way

People with road rage may become so angry that they follow drivers and cause further problems. Verbal exchanges between upset drivers can easily lead to physical altercations and even further risk of danger. To protect yourself and other drivers from harm, it is crucial to avoid interacting with aggressive drivers. This includes not exchanging gestures or words, or even looking at the angry driver. Instead, alert law enforcement officers to the situation so they can handle it in a safe manner.
