Dealing with trauma after a dog bite

Dog bite attacks can be incredibly painful and traumatic in the moment. But what about the aftermath of the incident? Studies that examine the experience of dog bite victims have shown that the trauma of a dog-related attack can last long after the incident itself has ended.

The Seattle Times tells a story in which numerous victims recount their extended suffering after being viciously attacked by a dog. Many of them report having emotional and mental pain that lasts well beyond the lengthy healing period that their physical wounds require. Some develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to dogs. Some may find themselves with a phobia of dogs. Others become so deeply afraid and anxious of seeing a dog again that they become agoraphobic and are unable to leave their homes.

When FindLaw examines what to do in the aftermath of a dog bite attack, they discuss the many different facets of the attack that could require compensation that the average citizen may not initially think about. This can include the costs of the emotional and mental turmoil that a victim faces. Examples include the cost of therapy sessions, tools, or treatment methods that a victim may need just to be able to get out of their house again.

Regardless of how a dog bite attack has affected an individual, it is important for that victim to get the compensation they deserve. Those who are in this situation may have a long road of recovery ahead of them. Any bit of financial aid can make a world of difference.
